Our Premier Release of 2025: The Artist's Masterpiece Secures the Premier Spot.

On the surface, Lux might appear more like an arduous university challenge than the latest popular music album by an artist who just had a previous single was a collaboration with an international K-pop star. Divided into four different parts and sung in thirteen languages, we have a breathtaking orchestral-influenced album investigating female mystique, religious transcendence, and corporal transformation, frequently via the lens of various saintly figures. The dissolution of a romance—a topic handled with grounded honesty elsewhere—is launched skyward on this record, carried by the constant sound of a full symphony orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter among an extensive roll call of contributors. Its sheer audacity by itself renders the efforts of other pop stars appear quite small.

Rising Above Scholarly Pretense

That Lux manages to avoid dry academic chin-stroking feels almost miraculous, with complete credit belonging to Rosalía. While it's not the first time project to fuse historical sounds with modern styles, its scale feel far greater on Lux, with the balancing act more dramatic. What really raises her fourth release, outside of its multilayered melodies, rich compositions, and inherent drama, is an essential spirit of fun. Similar to the legendary Björk during her peak, there is a captivating quality to Rosalía's voice that pulls the listener into its whirlwind. Even when she's breaking hearts apart, the listener still desire to be alongside her through the journey.

A Prime Moment of Joy

That playful spirit comes forth clearly on a stirring Italian song about a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool over several moments. Suddenly, all the music falls silent, and we hear a gleeful laugh and a comment before a hilariously exaggerated string crescendo thuds down like cartoonish impact. The track then segues to the wild single driven by galloping strings, an imposing choir, and a cameo appearance from none other than Björk.

"The magic with this album is that you never exactly understand—nor wish to know—what it will go next."

Nearly each track concludes in a completely different place from where it began. One moment explores the transient trappings of celebrity over a delicate orchestration only to disintegrating into electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut echoing the artist's previous rhythmic style starts off moody and brooding, with prowling beats, until fluttering flamenco handclaps and a heavenly choir enter to smooth its rough edges.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Accessibility

Another crucial achievement on the album is straddling the gap between radical experimentation and broad appeal. It is little surprise that it has become the artist's first release to crack the upper reaches of major markets: at its core a suite of utterly catchy pop songs. A song sung primarily in the English language builds on a chorus that feels to gather increasingly infectious hooks as it spirals skyward. That trick gets repeated on another powerful ballad that expands and constricts, weaving multiple melodies as a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like number charms via its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with pop culture honesty of contemporary heartbreak songs, eviscerating a former partner labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across these tracks, the singing carry a sharp smile, akin to a fairy-tale character concealing a blade: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You've the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Soul

This album is pop on a grand scale, an ambitious grasp for capital-A artistry in an era of impending AI-generated sameness. It eschews solipsism for sublime transcendence, crafting a dramatic drama that masterfully manages its own inherent excess. It is a deep well of buried gems that requires time to completely explore but doesn't seem like hard work. While other big pop albums of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, this record is a sumptuous banquet where the guests around the table, perhaps tipsy on holy drink, flutter between discussions about historical saints, the profound sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and common gossip about hopeless men. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from pop's most endlessly inventive visionary.
